Dean threatens to break up media

Dec 5, 2003 12:19AM PST

A number of web sites are reporting this story:

"Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean?s beef with big media just got a whole lot meatier. Now the former Vermont governor is threatening to break up media conglomerates, although he wouldn?t exactly say which ones....

As for Fox, Dean joked that he would break the right-leaning network, presumably from parent News Corp., "on ideological grounds."

Just think if a republican 'joked' in that vein.

He was quite serious and only AFTER apparently thinking about what he had let slip did he start waffling.

Reagan once joked about bombing Russia, not realizing his mic was live. Don't you think that's a more dangerous type of joking?

If Dean doesn't actually try to break up Fox, I wonder if he'll be called a liar in this forum for joking about it, as Gore was when he joked with the ILGWU that his mother used to sing him to sleep with the "Union Label" song.

Don't woor about that Josh because he won't be in any position to do that.

Even the NYT (Liberal to the core) is more than a little upset with him and his antics.

Hi, KP.

And why is that a bad thing? Media conglomerates were forbidden for many years in this country (until about the last 10, in fact), and television/radio stations weren't "owned," but "licensed" in the public interest. Many of the excesses you folks are always complaining about didn't exist back then, either -- maybe those issues aren't entirely unrelated?

It doesn't sound too great...

when the politicians try to intimidate the media, and pick which organizations, like Fox, will be broken up. It's like Roosevelt threatening to pack the Supreme Court if they didn't start approving his programs. A VERY slippery slope.
