The flash drives do die and really nothing to do but accept it. As a last resort, crack open the casing and check the innards for bad solder joints or loose componets, solder back on. If you find nothing, then nothing left but to pitch it. Sorry, but cost for a new one of at least 1Gb is under the $10 range, so playing with a 256mb is up to you.

I have a Lexar 256 MB thumb drive. I read the replies you sent Paul. However, when I insert the drive in the usb port nothing happens. I ran diskmgmt.msc and it did not recognize it. I inserted a different one and it did recognize it. I also inserted it directly into the computer usb port.
I do not see the "safely remove" icon on my task bar either, I have two computers one with win vista home ed. and win 2000. any suggestions to recover my dead thumb drive, since I bought it when they first came out I paid a good penny for it.
