Hi there. I managed to total my laptop (nobody to blame but myself!), but I'm pretty confident that the HD itself is intact. I'd like to grab some data from it, and a forum search eventually turned up this thread:
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7813-0.html?forumID=69&threadID=22623&messageID=245142
The problem seems to be similar, although in my case the computer I'd use to link up the HD to is also XP. It seems like the solution is within that thread, but the link to the adapter at geeks.com appears to be broken, and I'm not sure of the relevance of the microsoft link (in other words I'm just not sharp enough to get it..). If this is indeed the solution to my problem, could any knowledgable types out there tell me a little more about what I should do, or help me out with some up to date links?
Many thanks,
Matt

I've just posted a new question, which made me realise that I'd never taken the time to thank you for this. As it happens, some fluky laptop bashing brought it back to life before the part had arrived, but I'll tuck it away safely in my emergency box - hopefully never to be seen again!
Do as Ive seen the Mods here post on more than one occasion.. Back up your data?.. Just a guess but is this a Compaq presario 700?? (Bashing).. Thermal transfer pads break down on these and short out the CPU's.. Read one post somewhere that a felloow use to drop his from two feet to get it to boot.. (Kind of humerous)..
