Data Execution Prevention and DrWatson Postmortem Debugger

Nov 2, 2006 1:19AM PST

God almighty I hate this. Every so often, I come back to my computer, and I've got this glaring Data Execution Prevention msg saying that it's prevented drwatson postmortem debugger to run... and/or Run DLL as an app.

And then I'll open up my taskmanager and I'll have a bunch of copies of each open.

I invariably have to reboot.

I have Kaspersky AV installed, so I don't think it's a virus... but right now I have no idea what's going on. I really don't like that feeling, I normally know what's going on with my PC.

Anyone have any solutions?

Some Things To Try...
Nov 2, 2006 2:31AM PST

Dr Watson can be a pain sometimes and the issue could be lots of things, most probably spyware. Dr Watson detects various type of system faults . Please download, install, update, then run a full system scan with the spyware removal tool below:

Ewido/AVG Antispyware 7.5 Tool

If it comes up negative, then you can also try excluding DrWatson.exe from "DEP" using the instructions in the link below. The file should reside in the C\Windows\System32 folder:

Hope this helps.

There is an "off" switch for DEP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention

While I like to leave this enabled, from time to time we find a driver that has not been updated to work with DEP. Usually I find a clue in the EVENT VIEWER but your post is too light on detail for me to go much further than to try it with the DEP turned off.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot! I just edited my Boot.ini and switched DEP to AlwaysOff... hopefully that'll solve it. At the very least, even if DrWatson goes beserk again (and it's not spyware or a virus, ran a full scan with both Lavasoft AdAware and Kaspersky AV, as well as having a good look through my HiJack This! logs) I will know where the problem is.

Cheers!

As to the event log, it didn't tell me much except drwatson suffered a fatal error... and rundll32... etc. Nothing that I didn't know before. I can't read the bytes so that doesn't help me much. =)

data execution prevention
Jun 10, 2007 6:38AM PDT

Hi, I use an Acer laptop with genuine windows xp pro and I have this DEP problem too (mainly with the DrWatson postmortem debugger but also with "run dll as app" and some other softwares), and since it started to happen to me only when I installed Kasperksy anti-virus 6 and for what I read, people having this problem also use this antivirus I guess this is a kaspersky related problem.
maybe someone could confirm this? Is there any other fix than just turning the DEP off?

Other Suggestions Given... Did You Try Them?

And if none of them help and you know Kaspersky is causing the issue, have you contacted their customer support?

Hope this helps.

I'm getting that too,
Jun 22, 2007 12:06PM PDT

usually when I try to open either the Shared Documents or the auxiliary files in the Pinnacle Studio. But I don't have Kaspersky.
Gonna try the stuff you've suggested.
sometimes, I can just move that box aside and keep working.
Plus, I get stop errors, usually when I'm trying to connect.

I've got a reconditioned Gateway FX400( cause I refused to buy anything new with Vista and Norton's already installed) though I've added about 1 1/2 gigs of RAM, another hard drive, and a hardware modem.
Got XP home, IE6, Zone Alarm, adAware, Spywareblaster.

I'm inclined to blame everything on the Quicktime in the pinnacle, lol.
