Data backup in Win 8

Aug 16, 2014 3:50AM PDT

I have used Karen Kenworthy's Replicator for years with Win XP. It doesn't work with Win 8 and a friend says it doesn't work with Win 7. I like it because you can access individual files in the backup. Specifically, a particular photo or MP3 cut. I am cautioned in Win 8.1 not to try to use an old XP program for backup as I might loose data. Can a program like replicator be made to work in Windows 8.1?

Maybe but ask it's author to update it.

Here I use Syncback, Goldsync, Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier to name a few because they allow me to access files in the backup. I can also tell it what or where to backup to and from.

Try Easeus Todo Backup Free

I've been using it since Windows 8 came out, and it works very well for me. It will let you double-click a backup file, see the individual files and folders and select what you want to restore. It will create a stand alone disc you can boot from if need be to restore your system.

Good luck.

Many options for you.

If you prefer a GUI there are programs like Syncback (http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html) pr Microsofts Synctoy (free download, however see http://techhelphome.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/problems-with-synctoy-2-1-on-windows-8/ for a necessary add-on).
If you can make a batchfile try xxcopy (free, use the /bu option) or robocopy (comes with Windows).

Moreover, there's Acronis TrueImage. It makes an image you can restore in its entirety, but you can also access individual files inside the image. The paid version allows for incremental backups.
Member wpgwpg generally recommends easeus backup, as you read above.

Both Windows 7 and Windows 8

Both Windows 8 and Windows 8 (maybe Vista too, I don't know) have a feature called File History, which is essentially a backup program. It's a bit harder to find and access in Windows 7, but on Windows 8 it's on the Home tab of any Windows Explorer window. It's somewhat rudimentary, but it's right there and at least worth a look.
