DAT72 backup help

Jun 2, 2006 11:15AM PDT

My boss wants me to set up a manual backup system onto a DAT72 tape. This is not going to be a permanent setup so i'm looking for a simple solution. I've plugged the dat72 drive into the server (i think Poweredge 3100 w/ windows 2003). I restarted the server (while everyone else was gone) and there was no recognition by the computer of any tape drive being installed except during bootup when it seemed to have recognized the drive (it was found while checking drives). There was nothing about a tape drive in ''my computer'' (I don't think there is supposed to be), so I have no idea of how to access the media to put the data on the tapes. Any words of wisdom, or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

From memory Windows doesn't support many devices like that and rarely would a tape drive show in "My Computer" or such display.

Instead BACKUP SOFTWARE such as Veritas would be installed and that would use the tape drive.

Quick Fix
Jun 3, 2006 9:56PM PDT

I'm pretty sure that this tape is compatible because we have one like it on another server, and I didn't expect it to appear in My Computer. We have Veritas on the server, but this is a recycled backup server and the configuration is all goofed up. It won't let you in without connecting to a backup server. My understanding was that we could just shove the files onto a tape some otherway just as a quick fix. We will be using the Filemaker backup eventually so we don't want to spend a lot of time on this.
