dash lights dim with headlights/parking lights on

I have a 97 Grand cherokee ltd that when the headlights or parking lights are turned on, the dash lights go very dim. I can fiddle with the headlight swtich and get them to brighten again for a few moments, but they go back to dim again after a few moments. I have heard that the cause is either the computer behind the dash ( $750 replacement ) or that the light switch itself could be bad? Has anyone else had this issue? The light switch is relatively inexpensive, but would rather get some feedback before spending the time and money replacing it!
