Da Vinci Code Actor: Bible Should Have 'Fiction' Disclaimer

May 17, 2006 3:48AM PDT

If "The Da Vinci Code" was already feeding the flames of controversy with its challenge to the basic tenets of Christianity, actor Ian McKellen managed to pour a refinery tank's worth of gasoline on the fire on this morning's 'Today' show, asserting that the Bible should carry a disclaimer saying that it is "fiction." Matt Lauer, in his second day "On The Road With The Code," was in Cannes for the film festival, where the Code will have its debut. It has already been screened to some critics, who have given it decidedly mixed reviews.

As I reported here, NBC reporter Melissa Stark yesterday dipped a timid toe in the sea of controversy when she interviewed Code director Ron Howard, asking how he reacted to the controversy the movie has created . . . for the Church! Sounding more like a sensitivity trainer than a Hollywood director, Howard offered up some ambiguous prose about it being healthy thing for people to engage their beliefs.

Lauer took the bull of controversy more directly by the horns when he interviewed the cast and director Howard today. Said Lauer:

i totally agree the bible should have a disclaimer.

accurately describing history. The disclaimer is very cleverly written to imply that the historical claims are true while admitting that the whole thing is fiction.

ignorance all over the placeSad I hate to read peoples opinions on the Bible knowing that 90% of them have never even read any of the gospels. No matter what you say it will take the Hand of God to touch them to make believers. I get tired of trying to explain to themSad

If you need the disclaimer

you probably won't pay attention to it. And if you pay attention to it you probably don't need it.

Best thing said so far.

This is just to cause a reaction from those who believe in the Bible and it seems to me that most of them simply ignored it.

"....reaction from those who believe in the Bible...."

What surprises me is that someone of Jewish heritage doesn't believe in God. All I have known believed in God and when talking religion mentioned that Jesus and his 12 Disciples were Jews.

Da Vinci, nothing but the facts
May 18, 2006 2:42PM PDT

copied from the book, as far as i know this is all he claims as fact....

FACT:
the priory of sion -a european secret society founded in 1099- is a real organisation.
in 1975 Paris's Biblioteque Nationale discovered parchments known as Les Dossiers secrets, identifying numerous members of the Priory of Sion, including Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo and Leonardo Da Vinci.
the vatican prelature known as Opus Dei is a deeply devout Catholic Sect that has been the topic of recent controversy due to reports of brainwashing, coercion and a dangerous practice knows as "corporal mortification". Opus Dei has just completed construction of a $47 million World Headquarters at 243 Lexington Avenue in new york city.
all descriptions of artwork, arcitecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.

Les Dossiers secrets....

I'm pretty sure I saw something about this claiming that scholars consider Les Dossiers secrets to be fakes.

Opus Dei says what's in the book is slander which is the basis for their call for lawsuits.

This whole kerfuffle will be history in a week or two, if the movie is no good, which is what the buzz is. In a month people will be scratching their heads wondering what all the noise was about.

Your memory is correct re: fakes ...
May 18, 2006 9:31PM PDT

There are a lot of people alleging that Les Dossiers secrets are fakes.

For example:

The Da Vinci Code FAQ, by Massimo Introvigne, There is no doubt that both Les Dossiers secrets and the parchments are false documents, compiled in the year 1967, and all the people involved in the falsification have admitted it

belief vs imagination
May 18, 2006 10:45PM PDT

the da vinci code movie is a drama based on a novel. both are works of fiction.
the bible is a handbook for judeo-christian beliefs.
and since a god(maybe) created all things; including the authors of both , is he/she/what using (put a generic possessive here) infinite wit to promote useless discord?

or is m5019 an obvious agent of the Illuminati?
