D5000 Lens Recommendation

I have a D5000 with the standard AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens that it came with, and I am looking at upgrading my lens for indoor/outdoor photoshoots. There are so many option to choose from and I am not sure which is the best. I will be taking mostly still shots with various settings. I have all the lighting I need for indoors, just want to make sure I have the best lens.
