d-link router not communicating with laptop

Hi. I just purchased a d-link yesterday. My old router (comstar) had to be re-booted all the time, and I got fed up with it. My laptop will not acknowledge the new router. I've called d-link's tech support several times. They all have me do the same thing over and over and over. It doesn't work. I have the DIR-615, the laptop is vista. With the Comstar I had no problem whatever connecting to the laptop. They keep having me delete all the networks that show up, and go back to Connect To. My network does not show up. Over and over and over they have had me do this. Occasionally back to the PC to fiddle with the online setup, then back to the same routine on the laptop.

Knew there was probably going to be an issue when I first installed it. Was going through the steps on the CD, and at step 3 - detect router - it could not detect it. Everything was plugged in, and the lights were on. Had to finally have tech support walk me through the manual connection. The PC is connected, but not the laptop.

Any suggestions before it goes back to the store?

Thanks
N

How did you get on? I've got an emachines laptop eM350 running windows xp, and it detects the dlink dir650 but internet doesnt work. My PC is running windows 7 and is connected to the router via ethernet cable and gets the internet fine.

Please let us know how you got on as I'm having the same issues as you

Re: router problem

Two remarks:
1. It doesn't seem to be the exact same problem. In his case, the "step 3" didn't detect the router. In your case, you write, it is detected. So it's another problem.
2. Do you really think that the OP will read this? His post is more than 2 years old!

One recommendation:
Start a new thread for this new problem. You'll get a better answer if you include (copy/paste) all the ipconfig tells you about the connection it detected. Especially interesting: ip-address and gateway-address.

Not the same problem.

But a common complaint when folk use WEP for protection.

Try WPA2 next.
