Resolved Question

D-Link 655 needs restart 1-3 times a day - Help!

Aug 8, 2011 10:07AM PDT

I had a linksys router and was having an issue where I kept having to restart the router and it was dropping service so I ended up getting both a new router to a D-Link 655. I am having to restart the router at least once a day, often up to 3. I have my home computer wired into the router so it keeps working. However, by laptop will drop service and to pick it back up I have to unplug the router and plug it back in. At first I thought I was having an issue with my modem but I got a new modem and the problem did not resolve. Any ideas on how to help me?

The kid was running HAMACHI and the moment they uninstalled it, the drops ceased. It was amazong.

Further note. Torrents do this too!

What is Hamachi?

I have not heard of Hamachi or Torrents. Can you expand on this?

Put those words into yahoo.com or google.com and there's more than I can write in this small box.

No Hamachi or Torrents - any other ideas?
Aug 10, 2011 5:53AM PDT

I learned about Hamachi and Torrents and I don't have either on my computer. Any other ideas what could cause what seems like any router I use to need to be reset so frequently?

Next up? Security.

Is the wifi on WEP or less security? If so you find folk resetting to toss out the moochers.

Here with WPA2 if the modem locks up, it's usually a bad router. I changed that and no more lockups.

my settings...

Here is what I am finding in my setup - do you see something you would recommend changing? Thanks for all this help!

Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Security Mode: wep_open_128

So it is WEP

Remember that WEP is not protected at all today. The free kid friendly software will let me us that wifi in about 120 seconds or less.

I recommend current firmware in the router then its defaults. Now change just the SSID and then move to WPA2. If the router locks up, it's either getting too hot or has failed.

But WEP stories are not going to stop.

That did it - yesterday was the first day I have not had to reset the router. Thank you so much for the help.

Sorry for the typo.

I meant "use" not "us" above.

Try to not tinker too much with those router settings. Some will add MAC filters when they read some older advice and promptly report problems. Keeping it simple as I noted seems to help most folk, most of the time.
