d drive not reading discs

Mar 9, 2005 5:32AM PST

My pc runs XP Home. It has recently stopped reading any disc in the d drive. It will still burn discs but not play dvds. Device manager says it is working properly but it isn't... It is a Combo IDE5232CO only 3 months old. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Can you give more information?

What brand of dvd drive was it? IDE5232CO really doesn't tell much. And what kind of DVDs are you playing with it? If it's movies, it may just mean player or codec problems. If it records, it should read fine. During and after recording, the drive should read some of it to verify the information recorded. It might just be software problem.

dvds not playing

I am not sure what make the DVD drive is. I don't think that's the real problem - I replaced the old one in Jan because I thought it had died but now the new one is showing the same symptoms it must be the pc. The drive is visible as an icon but nothing comes up when duble clicked. It spins away but nothing eventually happens. I am trying to play music dvds - I now have 3 copies of Springsteen Live in Barcelona because I thought it might be the disc, but they work in other players. Audio cds won't appear either.

Here's the tools I've used to ID such.

1. BELARC ADVISOR. Find with google.

2. More specific than Belarc is the CDinfo tools from http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

3. AUTOFIX (find with google) does seem helpful in clearing up some issues.

After this we get to dive a little deeper.

Thank you. I tried those three steps but it didn't seem to shed any light on the matter!!
