You didn't tell what software you are using, but I can guess some X terminal software.
The IP address would be your public IP address on the router. The router would then forward what ports are used by the terminal software to your private IP.
You get to configure the router.

I use CygWin to connect my user account in the University (Linux OS is installed there).
My network in home is wired, and the internet connection is shared from a central computer that we have at home. Our OS in all computers at home is WinXP Prof.
When I connect the Linux I write the command:
"setenv DISPLAY <I.P address>
"
(I think it need the IP to send the display to my computer).
The IP that I provide is of our central computer which get the Internet directly from the ISP.
Then, I connect to the central computer by RemoteDesktop, and use CygWin from there.
My question is, if I can use CygWin directly from my computer (because I have no Global IP for it), and how.
