Question

Custom Build W10 Computer Sudden Degradation of Performance

Mar 11, 2017 1:33PM PST

Hello everyone,

I have been having issues with my computer that I built myself and am attempting to fix the issue however I am having trouble doing so;
I have had no previous issues of any kind whatsoever, but, for the past week I have had issues where simple tasks are laggy and slow, not to mention that my twitch stream suffers as it becomes a powerpoint slideshow with real-time sound. Even running a game as simple as Rocket League produces choppiness as if I had poor connection in an online game despite being offline. If anyone would be willing to assist with this issue I will leave a list of my specs (as seen from Speccy) and steps taken below:

Specs:

Operating System:
>Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

CPU:
>Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.00GHz
>Skylake 14mm Technology

RAM:
>G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800)
>(Speccy did not recognize the RAM and one of the sticks was faulty so only 24GB are installed)

Motherboard:
>MSI Z170A GAMING M5 (MS-7977) (U3E1)

Graphics:
>4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI)

Storage:
>931GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB (SSD)

Steps Taken:
I have attempted reinstalling several drivers for Nvidia and making sure OS was updated, installed recent BIOS updates, I have made sure virtual memory settings for W10 were to preference, I have checked that there were no processes in the task manager where hogging any resources, I have run scans through CCleaner and Malwarebytes, and most recently did a reset of the computer sending it back to a fresh install state and reinstalling the graphics drivers and Rocket League just to test it.

In closing: if anyone would be so kind as to provide assistance it would be Most Appreciated.

Thank you.

Another question for R. Proffitt to check out

I'm reading the speccy ( I need the practice ) and am looking at this >
" Razer Game Scanner."

After a little more research I discovered this blog about it >

One person comments states this >

It's even worse that what you say. I found my computer being very laggy from time to time. Today I discovered that from within the task manager you can enable the I/O columns in the process view.

To my disappointment, I discovered that the Razer's game scanner server has more write I/O operations than ever other process on my computer combined! Damn you Razer!

Maybe has something to do with the Choppiness and Lagging ?

Just did that

I stopped the process for the game scanner but not seeing a real change, mouse still lags on the screen occasionally, etc. etc., but keep in mind that I reset the computer recently and it wasnt installed, while the lag/choppiness was still an issue.

But until more clues are had the report looks pretty optimal.

If some hardware has degraded then you need to replace that next. The tests so far don't really tell me what to suspect here.

It sounds like some improvement for the effort so we have that.

I appreciate your efforts

I understand, its really tough with custom built computers, but if its any help, i watched a youtube video on it today and I would occasionally get black and white bars on the video, (looked like a store barcode but sized to the video), my mind first jumped to any sign of corruption, and ran a sfc /scannow in console but it was non-conclusive. Regardless, thank you for your support.

Similar setup. Same problem. Done my research
Mar 22, 2017 6:58AM PDT

Hey, so I have a similar setup as you with the i7 6700k and I too am running into lag, stutters, overall terrible performance for the PC's specs all within windows 10 pro. I have been doing my research and found that A LOT of people are having issues with your setup of the 6700k & the MSI Z170A gaming m5 motherboard.. Unless it's you posting on all these forums, which I doubt...

It's really baffling and frustrating because we spent good money on an above average PC but run into performance problems where it performs like a Celeron processor from 2007.

Here are the things that I've started to think based upon the research and forum searching:

• It could be a problem with the 6700k processor as it seems like the performance will drop, but then goes back to it's speedy 4.0 GHz i7-6700k potential.
• Windows 10 and the 6700K are very glitchy - there is the "skylake bug" if you research but that causes freezing and the only solution is to hard reset.

Please make a new post and not bury it in someone else's post .
Although not marked as solved, it is solved .

Not Necessarily
Mar 25, 2017 7:37AM PDT

Although there has been no further update on the issue it is technically not solved, I did a little investigation and it may be a malfunction with the motherboard, and thus I made an RMA for it. However, this problem has not been fixed thus far.

Thanks for the bug report.

Nice clue but all that would tell me is that my motherboard BIOS is likely out of date. Or that I must choose another board and CPU. Hard for some to do either.

No magic here. Can't fix what the makers have not fixed.
