Resolved Question

Cursor clicks on it's own?

Mar 11, 2012 12:43PM PDT

We have an Inspiron N7010, and I'm not sure if this is built into it or it's a problem, but if the cursor is left over something for a very short period of time it "clicks" it by itself. This is very frustrating! If this was an engineers brilliant idea, and can be turned off please tell me how! I have spent a lot of time trying to figure it out with no luck. I don't see a search feature for this forum either, if I'm missing it, and someone can direct me to it I'll gladly give it a try too. Thanks in advance.

As this is a laptop

As this is a laptop, the first thing you should do is make sure you are VERY aware of the location of the palms of your hands. It is very easy to accidentally rest them on the trackpad and not even be aware of it.

So if you actually pick your hands up off the laptop and hold them at the sides of your head like someone in a TV show who has a gun pointed at them, does the problem still happen?

Yes

It will do it when you aren't even touching the computer. It also has a bad habit of double clicking instead of single. Really aggravating when you are moving the cursor to try and get it in a "safe" place and it clicks on somethng as you are going over it and you lose your work. This is while using the touch pad to move, and left and right click buttons on it, no external mouse hooked up.

So just to humor me
Mar 12, 2012 5:21AM PDT

So just to humor me, you could get up and stand 2-3ft away from the computer, and it would still do this? No part of your body is within reach of the trackpad. I ask, because it is actually a pretty common thing for people do simply rest their palms on the trackpad and not know it. They will swear up and down that they are not resting their palms on the trackpad, right up until you tell them to do something like I suggested to you, when magically the problem goes away.

Just want to be absolutely sure to rule that out before moving on.

Not sure now
Mar 13, 2012 10:35PM PDT

Now I've tried to get it to do it and it won't. It hasn't done it at all for the last couple weeks, and doesn't double click when I try to click just once. I'm wondering if maybe it simply had a sticky/touchy button that has loosened up now that it's getting some use? This is the first lap top for me, and the touch pad is far from my favorite thing, I tihnk turning it off and adding a regular mouse is coming soon!

Thanks for the help.
