General discussion

Currently have dialup...

Mar 15, 2005 8:26AM PST

Since I live out in the sticks, I checked with the local phone co. which is my ISP, to see if I can get DSL. They offer it for up to 4 computers and 1 telephone at a price of $34.95 per mo. Is this a good deal? If so,what do I need to know or watch out for? They are supposed to get back with me tomorrow.
Thanks
Larry

Anything is better than dial-up. That's a good price for ADSL. Their mention of multiple PCs sounds like they offer networking from the local telephone office, it's something new.

My take? Get the basic ADSL service which will get you phone service and internet access. You can add a router later if you have more than one PC.

This is a small town, but the phone co. is replacing all the old lines with new Fiber Optics Cable lines, so that should also help. They will probably get out in this area last, seems thats how it works here. I think they have the city finished, and are doing the rural areas now. On dialup I usually get 46.6 Kbps to 48.0 Kbps which isn't bad considering some of the speeds I have seen on the forums. I'm about 12 to 15 miles from the phone co. Don't have any cable here either, it stopped about a mile down the road, but it's nice and quiet out here.
Have a Good One.
