General discussion

Curious mostly

Dec 25, 2005 11:10PM PST

Operating system and specs are not a factor. Symantic has an on-line Security Scan that checks ones computer for online vulnerabilities. the curious part is that i tried it on two of my machines, one with XP home and the other with Win Me and the results show I did not have any Anti-virus capability installed. On one computer I have free AVG and the other Free Avast. Does anyone know why the test would come out this way. Thanks, just curious.

Interesting...

I used your link, ran a scan, and it also stated that I did not have an antivirus program, when I, like you, have the AVG7 program. You don't suppose their trying to "sell" something. Do you. Ha Ha Ha.

My first guess also LOL. But I think you are right they probably want us to think we are not protected.

I get the same message

from Zone Alarm since I keep it's AV turned off. I believe you are right; they just want you to buy their product. BelArc Advisor says I am protected and that's good enough for me.

Symantec has joined the world of slimeware.

Google symantec complaints, symantec problems, symantec "anything" and you'll find tons of Symantec problems. They once had a good thing going, and now thier killing them selves.

Security Status: Safe!
You are protected against most common security threats.

Norton doesn't fit the "slimeware" category IMHO

Hi cactus,

You place Norton (symantec) in the slimeware catagory & I have to disagree with you 100%. You base this theory on Google Searches where people complain about it, say it's bad etc. I believe for every person who somehow or for some reason dislikes Symantec software there are 50 people quietly using it and happy with the end results. So your reasoning that because you can Google & find complaints but VERY few seem happy might be slighty flawed thinking.

I think if you took a survey here more people would like the software than dislike it.

Personal experience as well...

Used Symantec products four years. Most of them worked out fine for awhile, them went to crap. They "catch" many false positives, often claim systems are not as protected as they are, including the online scan.

In our ever changing world of threats it's reasonable that "stuff happens". But in the case of Symantec products, "stuff happens" too often.

Why do you think Symantec would make it nearly imposible for most users to purge thier systems of Symantec related probucts and files. Particularly "trialware"? When they get you, they want to give you little or no chance to leave.

Many of the resources available in search engines regarding Symantec are written and published by review editor's of CNET and ZDNet, and courts of law both foriegn and domestic.

Sure enough, I am using ZASS ver 6, get the same, I am at risk and need a firewall. ZASS showed the attempts with alerts during the test. Like I said, earlier in the year I dropped them afer many years, they even brought their own shovel to the cemetery!
