Curiosity killed the modem

Nov 19, 2003 8:48AM PST

(This is not a major problem since I use a cable modem and the phone modem is only for an occassional fax)
I did something (stupid), I think I followed the item under PCTVoice at http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_p.htm (to remove the item fromstartup) and now I my modem rings for incoming calls (as it should) but I can not make an outgoing fax. I went to device manager and disabled the modem, rebooted and then XP located the new modem and installed it. But, I can not make an outgoing fax, what else should I try?

Larry,

You haven't tried System Restore?

Sort of a last resort
Nov 19, 2003 5:48PM PST

since this is not a high level problem (other PC's can handle outgoing once a month fax) and I don't remember how far back to go and what products I installed in the interim (since the restore date) that would have to be reinstalled. A last resort that I might avail myself of if no other option is presented

Larry,

Try uninstalling the modem, shutdown, move it to another PCI slot and reboot to reinstall the driver.

Hold the phones...

I sent a test fax and it went through. Somehow, I guess, I must have killed the squeaking noise, but the fax, in fact, can make outgoing calls. Wow!

Hey, I was wondering, considering that we are capable of sending a probe to Jupiter and beyond, landing a man on the moon and returning him, why someone hasn't figured out how to make a pleasant sounding telephone modem. How about a sexy voice saying "mmmm!" instead of that obnoxious squeal?

(NT) Good job Larry....BTW, you can turn off the modem sound!...

May have found it!!...

Always is a good idea to got to "Help" first. The following looks like the procedure... will try it anyway.

To adjust modem speaker volume
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
On the Modems tab, click the modem that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
On the Modem tab, under Speaker volume, move the slider to the left or right to adjust the volume.
Notes

To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
Some modems will not allow you to adjust the speaker volume.

David,

Mine works the same except it does not respond. It's probably the modem that does not respond. Sad

Thanks!
