Crossover connectivity problems after SP2

First hiccup after SP2 (no probs before) occasionally need to connect workstation and a laptop with crossover cat5 cable-pre sp2 I could just turn off IE firewall, zonealarm firewall, search fot the other computer by name and ( having already set sharing) it would come right up, now with SP2 I have missed something between the lines of opening a port? or setting a port-Pointers desired-solicited.. TIA, all units have good WWW connectivity, ( I set firewalls back on after attempts-etc....ordinary NIC interface,etc-)

Just my input. I had to uninstall Zonealarm, get the network working, then install ZA. Disable didn't work.

This ZA issue really bugs me as I've experienced it some hundred plus times.

Removed ZA-

In reply to: Re: Crossover connectivity problems after SP2

Used JV16 to scour out the registry for it even, tried using exceptions in sp2s windows firewall cpl, tried turning FW off, etc etc, reran network setup, verified crossover cable- each can ping the other ok, but something is still stopping the show.. any more ideas? Run Network setup from the CD??, either will still connect to the WWW thru lan just fine, (Firewall back on)?? Thanks so far..

Then I have to KNOPPIX it.

In reply to: Removed ZA-

Since there is more than one machine at play here, I end up booting up a KNOPPIX to see if it's the client or the server that has the issue.

Sorry, I can't tell you the exact steps, it's sort of automatic to me. Click, click, click...

If i remove zone alarms completely-no problems connecting-however cannot install ZA again- (message about vsmon missing or cannot start) so if I use a restore point, I can have ZA back but not crossover connection-??

Time to hit ZoneLabs and the Security Forum to see if others are reporting that issue.

All I can share is the ZA's disable doesn't work (still?!)

Based on that I think I'll try

In reply to: Re: Further

Stopping it with task manager- then see what is in systray-related to ZA-stop that too-then try connecting. Make sense??

Sorry, I can't use or support ZA.

It's a nice enough program, but appears to cause more trouble and cost to some consumers. Try another firewall. Kerio?

Hint! The zonelabs forums. Here, it's XP.

Found my fix!!

In reply to: Sorry, I can't use or support ZA.

With SP2 firewall running->>task manager terminate ZA, then stop XP-sp2 firewall, then search for computer name-POW- it links right up, do my files or whatever transfer, restart Windows firewall, and let ZA restart whenever the computer or laptop reboots...ZA has served me well for 6+ years, I hesitant to rely only on the Windows FW.. perhaps I'll try the "Kerio"..
