Critical Security update 819639 allways needs to be installed?

Dec 14, 2003 1:50AM PST

Why is it that no matter how many times I install MS Windows Critical Security update 819639 every time I got to www.windowsupdate.com and look for updates it says this critical update needs to be installed? Installation history shows it has installed sucessfully every time.

"Why is it"...?

The answer is brutal. Microsoft just can't seem to get Windows Update to behave on some million plus machines. Right or wrong, you can see if this help this and other updates.

1. Take any number of such an update and place at the end of this URL -> http://support.microsoft.com?id= In your case this would be http://support.microsoft.com?id=819639

From there, download and manually install the update.

2. Review the update. Does it really apply to your configuration?

A fix perhaps.

When you visit the Windows Update site you may find the update list includes items that have already installed which may occur if an update installed had not been registered correctly. To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:

1. With this update selected, complete the installation. After restarting the computer, access the Windows Update site a second time and determine if the issue has been corrected.

2. Delete the applicable system registry key pertaining to this update (click Start, Run, type regedit, and then press Enter):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Updates\

and then either the key DataAccess or Windows Media Player

Note: Click the Plus box in front of HKLM to expand it and continue clicking/expanding appropriate folders (each word preceded by a backslash in the above address) until reaching either of the last two items wanted. Click, to bold/highlight the applicable update reference, and then select Delete from the shortcut menu. Click Registry in the main menu and select Exit to save the session. Or simply click the x in the URHC of the window to close the Registry Editor tool. Respond with an affirmative to save the editing and to close the editor. Please note that the Registry Editor does not have an Undo function and that all changes are written directly to the disk immediately. If you're ever unsure, Export a copy of a key which can then be Imported/Merged back later to restore the registry just as it was previously. Restart the computer and perform step #1 again.
