Hi, I'm having a very big problem and here's the whole story.
I use a Dell laptop with Windows XP Professional. I recently dropped it and the screen looked 'shattered' when I turn it on, but I have it hooked up to a LCD monitor and it luckily worked. Last week I caught a virus from the internet when it began to pop up perverse sites even when offline and (what I now know are fake) 'security alerts' that my laptop was under attack, and popups saying stuff was infected and blocking me from opening ANY applications. I was able to run a check with my anti-malware program but it told me almost every app was infected. I couldn't run the risk of deleting my applications and the associated documents (that I should have backed up, but I guess it's too late for that). I tried to act calmly and read some forums on how to delete my laptop's viruses, which I'm pretty sure is related to the anti-spyware scam Spyware Protect 2009. I thought the safest way to do this was in Dell's safemode. After another log-in, I quickly clicked into System Configuration Utility (msconfig) and checked "SAFEBOOT". I thought I would quickly solve my virus problems after this with proper deleting and installing better anti-virus programs...
Then I restarted the computer BUT the LCD monitor I hooked up no longer works so I can't see what is going on the computer!!! Why did that happen? Surprisingly I am still able to see on the left corner of my actual laptop screen that black and it says "Safemode" etc. so I know it is able to boot up. However, I try to press Enter, spacebar, 1, 2, 3, and nothing works. Instead it beeps angrily every time I press a button. I turned on the laptop a few times and I keep getting this screen and the noise.
Does anyone know what are the options on the safemode screen and can lead me through it? By some miracle, do you know a way I can get the LCD monitor to work again? Does any of this have to do with the virus. I do not have any recovery cds and there are too many important documents on my laptop that I would like to save if there's any chance in the world that that's still possible. Without a working monitor, I am literally blind to what's going on and it's very upsetting..
I'll appreciate any of your help.
