General discussion

Creative or Apple

Oct 2, 2007 4:07AM PDT

So, I am thinking about getting a new MP3 player and not sure about whether to get the new 4G apple nano or the 4G Creative Zen V Plus. I currently have a 1G Creative Nano Plus. I need more more G's so that is the reason for my interest in getting a new one.

I am looking for something that would be good for running and working out with weights. I also like to use it on long trips and it must have great sound quality. Not to be gross but I need something that can be sweated all over and not mess up. I have had this problem with cd players but my Creative Nano Plus was able to survive the sweat as well as go through the laundry a few times and keep on playing.

How often do you have to charge either the new apple 4G Nano or Creative Zen V Plus? How long before you have to get a new battery? I use my current player for almost an hour every day at least so, I go through a lot of batteries. Is getting a new battery easy and something you can do yourself or do you have to send it out some where? Can I actually purchase batteries for them on my own and install them myself?

I have never had an apple so I am curious how good they really are. So, if any one can offer some pros and cons of either the new 4G apple nano or creative zen V plus that would be great. -M

it's much more probably to use GB (gigabytes) rather than G because often G is used for "generation" which do exist in the business

anyway I think you should have a look at the Sansa View. It's got a lot of features for the price.

both are good for your purposes

Boh are lightweight and perfect for workouts. However, I wouldn't count on either to survive the laundry. When something costs $100 or more, I just wouldn't risk it.

Sound quality....I personally can't tell the difference between the iPod and the Creative (I don't have the Zen V Plus, I have the Stone). But my ears aren't all that great. I have heard the Creatives sound better, though.

The Zen V Plus is probably the better value. If you look hard enough, you could probably find one for $100 or less. It has an fm tuner if you want to take a break from your own tunes. Build-wise, the Nano feels better. The Zen V Plus feels toy-like. I'm not a big fan of the tiny joystick thingy. (I've played with one at Best Buy)

For both players, officially the batteries aren't user replaceble. I know that kits exist for previous iPod models and will probably be available for the new ones, but I'm not sure about Creative. I have a 2nd generation Nano. I use it for about an hour a day and sync it for a couple of minutes daily to transfer podcasts. Apart from those few minutes I rarely charge it. I charge it maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks. I own 6 iPods (I just got the Touch, but not sure if I'm keeping it). 5 I've owned for nearly a year or more. One of them I've had nearly 3 years. I haven't had battery problems yet.

For any prospective iPod owner, I do suggest they download the newest version of iTunes first and play around with it. You'll need it anyway and if you absolutely hate it, you can cross it off you list.

Good luck. I'm sure there is someone out here that has more experience with Creatives that can give better insight.

you should have a look at the Sansa View
it'll have a lot of features and a low price

also use GB (gigabyte), it's more proper and usually just G means "generation"

My experience with the Zen V
Oct 2, 2007 11:52AM PDT

I've had a 2 GB Zen V for a little over a year. A few months ago I accidentally soaked it in paper-shredder oil. I've dripped all of it out except for a big blob right under the screen. Oddly enough, the little thing never missed a beat. The screen is still visible behind the oil blob, too. Can't vouch for how it will handle sweat and soapy water, though.

Both are great BUT....

Hi
I used to have a Creative Zen Nano, but after it got stolen Sad I swotched to an ipod...
My creative survived a number of times being in contact with water, but I found it slightly too 'toyish' and flimsy. eg. I had to send away for a new battery cover 8 times!!! Although every time Creative sent me a new one for free - I'm not sure if Apple's replacement cover is quite THAT good! But I don't know because nothing on my ipod has ever broken (apart from earphones which my cat chewed on!!)
Personally, I will be sticking with ipods (I have the shuffle (great for exercising with!!!!) and the 2nd gen Nano) because of their durability, better screen and just the 'more expensive feel'!!

Go for Apple
Oct 4, 2007 9:54AM PDT

I've personnaly owned iPod nano 1st and 2nd gen, and Creative Zen V Plus and the new Zen.

There should be no doubt in your mind, go for Apple! The sound quality is a bit better from Creative, and their Mp3 usually got more features than Apple.

BUT, iPod are a lot more durable than Creatives! Look at reviews, Creative players are often broken. I just ordered a Zen, the first hour I used it, the left touchepad has broken up. When I got my Creative Zen V Plus, the center control pad has also broken up. My nanos never broke up like that. The battery life is also better from Apple iPod.

However, changing battery is a lot expensive for this compagny. I suggest you to purchase an warranty plan, and you'll be ok for 2 entire years! Free battery replacement! And be sure that your Apple mp3 will work much more longer than Creative mp3!
