Creating DVD or CD from MiniDV

Jul 19, 2006 4:22AM PDT

I have a friend who recorded a children's talent show on MiniDV and would like to make copies to DVD or CD to distribute to her class. Is there a way to do this that's not too difficult and/or expensive?

2 ways to do this.

1. Get a stand alone DVD recorder that has a firewire port and make your DVD by playing the MiniDV and record to the DVD. DVD records are around $120~170.
2. Use a PC that has a firewire card and import the video to video editting program, save this file and them use DVD creation software to make the DVD.
You need a good PC and Firewire PCI card($20~50). and the full version of Nero ($80~90) will do the job. John

Read your reply and have a similiar question - I have a Panasonic camcorder that came shipped with two software programs that allow capture of the miniDV tape to the PC with or without editing. The resultant file on the PC is an .avi file. I have contacted Panasonic numerous times seeking information on whether it is possible to convert the .avi file to a DVD playable on most DVD players and have become frustrated - the support staff seems to have no clue.

Do you have any thoughts - the software in question is
Panasonic Motion DV Studio for DV or Quick Movie Magic.Ink.

The avi file is probably a very uncompressed version

of your video. As such, it is the best file available for editing your video. Once edited, the file can be converted to mpeg-2 format, and burned to a DVD. One of the many available editors is the Studio version of Sony Vegas. It will do the editing and conversion to mpeg-2. Nero, Roxio, and many others have software that will create the DVD.
