Creating desktop item.

To begin with: You right click on a file in Explorer. Then you get a 'right click menu' with Send to ... And then there isn't an item "Desktop (create shortcut)" as there used to be. That's the problem? Or is it another problem?

Have a look in c:\windows\send to. That contains shortcuts and comparable things that are listed in the Send to submenu. Does it appear there? With me, it's one of those mysterious 0 byte files, also called shell extensions. What of those can you find?
I think this and some other functions are defined in c:\windows\system\shellfix.dll and work via the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellext). Is shellfix.dll listed there? Do you recognise other commands?

Without really looking around for a solution I can suggest 2 things:
1. The workaround. Right click on the desktop, choose New>Shortcut and browse to the file you want to be represented there. That should work.
2. The repair. Download and install TweakUI 1.33 (use google to find it) and try "Repair file associations" from the Repair tab. It's an unsupported but very proven and very useful Microsoft utility.

Hope this helps.

My text wasent to clear the send to was there but it wasent doing the job, but all is sorted now it was simple in the end, my desktop was full and they were going of screen (school boy error) i had to reduce the size of my icons for more space on my screen. Found your reply interesting anyway kees TWEAKUI 1.33 sounds interesting will keep that in mind for future reference. Thanks

Desktop clutter

If your desktop is so full that icons are going off-screen, it's time to clean up the desktop. The more junk (icons and wallpaper) you have on your screen, the bigger the performance hit you take as Windows has to redraw all that goop every time the desktop is displayed. Since you're running Win98, it's a pretty safe bet you have an older, slower system so why slow it down even more with needless "eye candy"?

The best bet is to clean up and organize the Start Menu, Quick Launch Toolbar and SendTo folders and, use them instead of the desktop for program launching.
