Create my own server?

Feb 14, 2004 1:54AM PST

I've heard that I can host my own page using a PC. I'm about to acquire an older Compaq P-III PC. It won't be real fast but I'll install W98SE on a new HD (40-60 Gb size) and max the RAM if needed.

My system now includes a home built AMD 2400+ with two HDs and 528 Meg of RAM with a D-link 4 port router connected to two other PCs.

Can I use the new PC to host my page?

Connect it to the router, allow access to just that PC?

What software will I need?

Is this a pipe dream or will it work?

Thanks.

The router will tend to make things difficult, because they often times prevent direct connections with any system attached to them.

Otherwise, pretty much everything you need can be found at http://www.apache.org . HOWTO guides, software, the works. And I'd strongly suggest Win2K or Linux. Partially for security reasons, partially because the design of Win9x makes it quite unsuited for even very light web serving.

If your site is going to be low volume I would take that P3 and put Fedora Core 1 (Red Hat Linux) on it with the latest version of Apache. You can run Apache on Windows but it was never meant to run that way. You can get help with using Apache on Linux from the Apache website http://www.apache.org or from Apache Freaks http://www.apachefreaks.com.
