Rather than put it on your desktop, why not put the shortcut (add to favorites) in your LINKS folder, then it's one click away in the toolbar all the time?

Go into your FAVORITES folder where you have saved it, then right click it, RENAME it to something short that you will recognize (you don't need to add .url at the end...any name will do), then right drag it to your Quick Launch area and choose COPY HERE.

....Similar to Toni's suggestion above...Open Internet Explorer, then make it a "normal" sized window so you can see some space on the desktop around the window. Now click on "Favorites" menu in the upper left corner, find the Favorite you want to save, RIGHT click on it and while holding down the RIGHT mouse button, "drag" your mouse to a blank area of the desktop. Release the right mouse button and choose "Create Shortcut Here".

Hope this helps.

This is so easy, so obvious, that you are all going to kick yourselves for not already realizing it.
If you get to a webpage that your want to make a shortcut to it on your desktop... just select the tiny icon in the left side of the Address field (to the left of where you have typed http:blahblah) and drag it to wherever you want.

If you want it on the desktop, just drag it to the desktop.
If the browser window is maximized and you can't see the desktop just resize the browser window first.

If you want the icon in your Quick Launch area just drag it there. etc.

If you want it somewhere in your Start menu, just drag it over the Start button and wherever you are allowed to copy it to you will see the mouse cursor change to a "upwards-right" arrow.
Wherever you can't copy it to the cursor will be the "no" symbol (a circle with a slash).
If the browser window is maximized and you can't see the desktop just resize the browser window first.

If you want the icon in your Quick Launch area just drag it there. etc.
