CRASHING !!

Sep 4, 2005 8:58PM PDT

This will probably be my last post since Windows has informed me that....."1720 Smart Hard Drive detects imminent failure".
After I installed Spybot last week my system has been failing fast.
When Scandisc tries to scan and fix the hard drive, it gets to Cluster 27,646 and STOPS! At one point it said "64 lost clusters saved as files". ????
This system is old Compaq DeskPro......W98 and has been making that light, clicking sound that I had HOPED was a fan....but undoubtedly it is the hard drive going bad.....OBVIOUSLY !
I did have 85% free space now I'm down to 74% I guess that means my hard drive is being "eaten alive"???

I know there's nothing I can do now but WAIT.....hold my breath and pray that Santa will somehow find me on Christmas Eve......lol
Thanks Guys for all your help
Sue

Backup your data (CD/DVD burner, USB flash drive, etc) and pray for a very early Christmas, as it will be your hard drive's last chance to see the big man himself. Wink

John
Actually I'm not rolling on the floor laughing.....more like crying !
Don't have a clue how much longer I'll be here?
This machine is on it's last, dying leg.....wish I could "save" it but don't have enough 'puter sense to do a thing but WAIT.......on the END !
If You see Santa........direct him to me Pleaseeeeeee otherwise.......I'll still be sitting here...waiting !!
LOL
I am kinda curious about how MUCH TIME I have left, since I got that notice yesterday?
1 hr?.......a week?
Thanks !

Sue, No Way To Know How Long

...I might be tomorrow and it might be six months. Your options now depend on how much you want to spend. Recently, I have seen advertisements for extremely cheap hard drives. That might be a consideration if you've got the original Windows 98 CD plus all the program CDs to reload your complete set up. Basically, you'll need a Windows 98 boot floppy, the Windows 98 CD and all your programs. Replacement of the hard drive and reinstall isn't that difficult..But it's up to you.

If you've got the money, a new computer is really nice though..Faster..a new operating system.....new programs and most importantly, a it's a new toy to play with.

Good luck...and Hope this helps.

The last Tech that installed a modem for me (I'm still on dial up) told me not to spend any more money on this machine.
The Tech before her, put a used hard drive in here (rebuilt) he said.
Right now I have a fan blowing on the back of the case because I think a fan isn't working and it gets hot. The clicking is either the fan or hard drive?

Windows left me a message today that it can't defrag until I've repaired the drive.

Since I know very little about computers and have very little money....I'm more or less just sitting here holding my breath and hoping I will be able to get on line again !
I have asked friends to be looking for another pc for me that I might can afford.

I also keep checking my free space and it's "dwindling" fast. Sunday I still had 82% and today it has decreased from 70 to 67% and that is with the removal of AdAware and Spybot.

I would like to thank all of you for your help and advice...this is a WONDERFUL place for those of us who are "ignorant" of computers to come !!!
You do a GREAT service to so many I'm sure !
Again
Thanks !!

Sue, Start Looking NOW...

Right now, there are a lot of "back to school" sales and I've been seeing a lot of good deals on computers in newspaper advertisements. If it all possible, it's better to have the new machine before the old one dies.

Still, if it comes down to not having enough money for the purchase, you have to make those important decisions....Do I want to eat or buy a computer.

I can NOT believe this. I had already unplugged this "THANG" and given up because it did such wierd stuff, I was ready to haul it to the dump!
I tried one last time and was able to get on line.

I have been unable to access Outlook or my homepage and all of a sudden I could? go figure !

The scandisc keeps stopping on the same cluster and I exit.....I KNOW I don't have much time left.
I'm going to look tomorrow and see what I can do.....maybe there's one out there I can afford, that WORKS!!

Thanks for your response and for caring ! You guys are WONDERFUL......if I do get another pc I'll know where to come for help !
Keep your fingers crossed for me......maybe I won't have to wait for Santa after all ....lol
