cpu votage?

Feb 28, 2006 10:52PM PST

For some time now I had been getttiing a beep while the system is running. Then suddenly it would just shut down completey, boom off. sometimes I can boot it right back up some times I have to wait a couple of minutes but then it boots back up normal. Then it might shut right down again and maybe it won't. The cpu is a P4 2.40ghz plugged into an ASUS p2s8x mobo with a 400 watt power supply.The asus probe sys monitor has been showing that the vcore voltage is a little low. So what could it be? CPU? mobo? powersupply? how do I fix it.This shutting down thing can't be doing it any good. Help!

You did'nt mention what your OS is

This is what i found

One long beep then machine shuts down - faulty, improperly installed or
missing CPU

Hi, thanks my os is is xp and I had a typo on the mobo it is actually a p4s8x and in the mobo book it says that short beeps during operation is indicative of cpu over heated or system runnig at a lower frequency.

You're right, sudden shutdown aren't good but the system maybe trying to save itself regardless.

The psu or power supply is all too often at fault. It may not be, but prudunce suggests you at least replace it with a higher wattage unit, its just good insurance to replace. Before that though you should at least check the innards of the system to see if "all fans" are running 100% OK and not iffy, plus clean out the dust bunnies as best as possible. Pay attention to the cpu HSF itslef(heatsink) and leave the side cover off for now. Run the system in this regard and see if it settles down, it maybe a heat problem due to dust not allowing heat disappation or a flaky fan. Further, if really a psu problem it will still crop-up sooner or later. Inspect the mtrbd. for any bugling, leaky, distorted, blown capacitors that look like little soda cans or similar, even a slight distortion is not good.

Inspect and post back.

Ok so it all looks ok and truth be know this is a system a put together myself and ran it for some time with the cover off and just put it on a couple of months ago. The fans all seem to be working fine here is the info on the sys report:
voltage mon.
+12=12.224
+5v=4.945
+3.3v=3.05
vcore=1.48
cpu fan is running 2280
chassis fan 2732
