CPU usage keeps hitting 100%

I have the following set up

Athlon 64 3500+ on DFI Lanparty mobo
4GB Ram
XP Pro SP 2
OS is on a 70GB Raptor
Data on second Raptor.

I seem to be maxing out the CPU with only the simplest tasks. Bigger tasks just bog right down.

The system is scanned for viruses every day (NAV) with updated definitions. I run Spyware and Adaware regularly.

Task manager shows 61 processes running which is a lot but then thisn is supposed to be a powerful system with muscles that should be able to hadle the load. Windows is recofnising 3407288 for RAM size which is about right given the number of TSRs running.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this setup hum? It seems way to sluggish considering its potential.

Which process(es) are troublesome?

Use the task manager to figure out which programs are taking up so much CPU time, then type the name into Google and see what pops up.

get this program- its free and helped mine

I downloaded winpatrol from download.com. It will help you by letting you go in and "turn off" any programs you dont need running. You may want to also do the google search on any program names you dont know of that are there. Do that as your going through the list shown in the winpatrol program. I had to do this when I was running Pinnacle studio program- captures video to make movies. My cpu wasnt at 100%, but it definitely fixed the problem. Take out any programs- through winpatrol- that you dont need at start up- like printers, yahoo mess, etc. You can still use these programs, but it wont load and run all the time. This is a free program for home users. Dont download the trial then buy version.

NORTON

In reply to: CPU usage keeps hitting 100%

Number one enemy of system speed is Norton Antivirus.

Get AVG from http://free.grisoft.com
and uninstall NAV, the install AVG.
I personally remove any program that is made by Symantec.

Norton can eat an enormous amount of CPU time.
