Try it. Be sure to match the FSB speed that the old chip is at.

HP support website should after you naviagate abit and find the specs page. That will tell you what upgrade options or if so capable where to proceed to of the options available. Offhand, I think since you have the older Intel cpu type 423-pin vs the newer 468 or 472-pin, it's not a good canidate, though I maybe wrong. That being the case, nope not a direct upgrade. Still again the options page provides the highest cpu supported and you may need further to update the bios for best operation or acceptance of new cpu.

Actually my computer is just fine. But recently I read that in fact my DSL modem which I am using now for about 4 months with a 1.60 Ghz CPU requires a 2.33 Ghz CPU.
In another forum I saw that also the XP SP2 update was intended for a minimum 2.33 processor.
So I thought now is the time for an upgrade.
Thanks anyway for your input.
P.S. I looked at the HP support page but I couldn't find CPU upgrade info.

Leo, I later checked and didn't find any "upgrade" info but did find "replace processor" heading(info) on cpu replacement. No direct mention on cpu upgrade, but as usually the case, upgrades is part of the business, so query them directly if no cost to you. Other than replacement and FSB considerations in order to jumper/config the system to accept a better processor it should work. Being OEM, HP tends to keep mums on some details. Check to see if any decal or sticker is localed inside the case denoting any further info. As for XP SP2, well I usually wait before jumping on the bandwagon until the dust settles regardless of any prior "requirements" for best operation, the plain is, there are too many old users out there that so far aren't being left behind or being so they will be. knock on wood.....
