Question

CPU turns on and off by itself

Aug 9, 2017 7:16PM PDT

I have a HP Envy 700-375d CPU for 2 years now.
Yesterday while i was gaming , my cpu turns off by itself. I decided to reboot and see if its working. It turns on for like 5sec and shutdown again(with the windows 10 Shutting Down... sign). i googled the problem and tried a few things

HP Envy 700-375d Specs:
https://support.hp.com/lt-en/product/hp-envy-700-300-desktop-pc-series/6886619/model/7019115/document/c04347493

(Default was 12GB RAM , I added a 4GB DDR3 )

List of things i tried :
1. Replacing the Motherboard Battery.
2. Cleaned Processor heatsink and all the fans.
3. Cleared CMOS
4. Used my old CPU power supply.
5. Reseat RAM

None really worked. But after i cleared cmos , i managed to reach until my login user screen and it shuts down again. When i plug in my PSU Cord my cpu just turns on itself and shutdowns immediately. At random times my cpu will turn on for a split second and turn off again for like 5-8 times.
I haven't tried replacing the thermal paste yet because i replaced it like 6 months ago.

Any suggestion? And Thank You for taking your time to read my post

Clarification Request
Did you try putting it back the way it was?

I had this old HP laptop that I upgraded RAM. Turns out it was not to be.

I put the ram when I bought the cpu its been working for that long. I could try to remove the extra ram and see the results.

You may have missed a word or two. I'm not sure what you meant to write here.

Sorry if I clarified it wrongly . What I trying to sat is I have been using the extra ram for quite a long time already and it hasnt cause any problem

Then you are looking at the old make it smaller method.
Aug 10, 2017 8:36AM PDT

As to the fan speed, it's proper for fans to go to max speed on start or crash.

This however was altered in later PC designs as owners were upset on that design choice. Newer models tend to be set to some medium to nearly max speed on fans when a machine powers up or crashes. Why? The speed control moved from a hardware to a mix of hardware and software control. To keep the parts safe and not overheat, when the software isn't responding or hasn't loaded, fan speed needs to be fairly high to avoid a hung machine sitting there and overheating.

I'll wait until....

....you replace the thermal paste and see if it does the same. Seems heat related. If you have a video card with a heatsink and fan on it, that could also be having a heat problem.

Thermal paste

I replaced the thermal paste . No difference. But I notice something. Everytime it turns on itself the fans speed at a very high speed before shutting down

Psu+mobo+cpu/hsf.
Nothing else plugged in or connected.
Does it power up?

Ok I removed the harddisk and cd drive from the psu and removed my mouse, keyboard, hdmi cable. It seem to last longer. I turn it off and connect the harddisk back without the cd driver. It managed to reach until my desktop for about 3min then it shuts down again

was top of HDD hot?
Aug 10, 2017 8:16AM PDT

Maybe the drive is overheating and causing your problem. Leave the HDD off and boot to a LIVE DVD version of Linux, or even a windows repair disc, using your DVD drive. LInux is freely available in various flavors called distros on the internet. I suggest Mint, Ubuntu, or Zorin Lite. If you can use the Linux distro from the DVD and not have it drop out, with the HDD not plugged in, then you found the problem.

What part of the title are you having a problem with?

I did tried it
Aug 10, 2017 8:30AM PDT

I only connected my psu to the motherboard and it lasted a little longer before shutting down

Anyways new updates:
I change harddisk with my old harddrive(doesnt have anything inside) and it work. After swapping back to my main harddisk my cpu boot up and didnt shut down yet. But my disk usage is at 100% red on task manager. Trying to figure out the problem

Psu+mobo+cpu/hsf.......NOTHING else connected or plugged in.

No ram, no hdd, no NOTHING.

Power on the machine and let it sit for 15 mins.

If it does not power down add one stick of ram.

Repeat the 15 min test.

If it does not power down plug a monitor into the mobo.

Do you get a bios screen?

Repeat the 15 min test.

power?
Aug 10, 2017 8:24AM PDT

Did you check out your power options?
Do you use "game boosters"? (when I was testing 10-15 different of those there was couple which made cpu run as max power all the time)
How about hardware Acceleration? Is it on?

Nod to make it smaller.
Aug 10, 2017 8:44AM PDT

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 can be removed, the ODD can be unplugged and you can scale it down to one stick of ram. The machine looks to have onboard graphics as noted at
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04347493

Since it won't stay powered up, you have to reduce parts until it does. Then you can add a part to sniff out which part it is.

If it still won't stay on then you haven't removed the right part yet or it's a major part like the motherboard or PSU.

UPDATE
Aug 10, 2017 8:37PM PDT

Ok my cpu is working fine now. i think. but my disk usage is at 100% on all times. Maybe my hard disk is failing? any ideas?

100% disk use. So many causes.
Aug 12, 2017 7:06AM PDT

Step 1. Be sure files you can't lose are on backups.
Step 2. Try the usual CHKDSK /F /R /X on the drive letters that the HDD provides. Most machines have C: some have other letters.

I don't see which OS (may have missed that.) So turn this off too. Read https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

Reply to your top post with a Web Speccy and I'll read it to see what I would change.
How is at https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

The Speccy report will have the HDD health values and more.

Do you know what's driving the HDD?
Aug 12, 2017 4:36AM PDT

From Task Manager ->Performance Tb, go to Resource Manager, then disk axtivity and order by disk activity (click the title). If it's one task always at the top that may give a clue as to what it's doing. Even if it was in continuous error retry, it should timeout at some point.

Check the S.M.A.R.T. statistics - they aren't completely reliable but may give you a clue. Or maybe your HDD manufacturer has a diagnostic tool you could download.

When the HDD is at 100% does that slow down or stop your programs from running?

100% usage
Aug 12, 2017 10:14PM PDT

i have been monitoring my task manager and resource manager for awhile now. nothing really uses all the disk usage. Now it doesnt stays at 100% sometimes it goes down and goes up again.

When my HDD is at 100% nothing happens . My games runs fine and browser works , i dont feel any slow or crash.

Where's the Speccy report?
Aug 12, 2017 10:32PM PDT

I can check the HDD health and other things. 100% disk use can be a sign of disk troubles.

Smart is saying your hdd is going south.

Get a new hdd and hope you can clone old to new before old fails.

What is with this mis-mash of ram sticks you have?

Who put that together for you?

That's asking for trouble.

yeah
Aug 13, 2017 4:41AM PDT

yeah im gonna get a hdd soon.

if im not wrong the first and second ram came with the cpu the third one i bought from a local store after telling them my cpu model and the amount of ram i can put in. and he gave me that.

As long as it works leave it alone.

If you start to have odd things happen/crashes you might want to look into fixing that.

As for now, do i leave the cpu off until i get a new hdd which is probably in 5 or more days. Or leaving it on is fine?

Your running on borrowed time with that hdd.

It could fail at any time, if it does you won't be able to clone and your looking at a total reload.

Do you have everything in place to do that reload?

If nothing else make a backup of 'your stuff'.
