CPU Soft Menu Please Help

I'm having troubles booting up my computer. At the very start this is what I see:
Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG, An Energy Star Ally
Copyright (C) 1984.99, Award Software, Inc.

Pentium III CPU at 550MHz
Memory Test: 327680K OK

Award Plug and Play BIOS Extension v1.0A
Copyright (C) 1998, Award Software, Inc.
Detecting IDE Primary Master ... Maxtor 53073U6

CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck - CPU Soft Menu

F1 to continue / Del to enter setup

When I press F1 it starts to run but after a couple seconds it just shuts down and goes back to the very beginning. Is there something I should do in the setup?

Please help.

Re: CPU Soft Menu Please Help = Not a XP issue.

I read it twice and it appears your hardware needs repair. The message is typical if the CPU Heatsink feel off.

Unless you can tell what XP issue you think is causing this.

You didn't spec your hardware (model)
I have seen this if overclocking exceeds the
cpu specs, or sometimes it comes up if the Boot process was interupted during POST or your motherboard battery may be dead.

P3 is old enough I would replace the battery and then enter the BIOS and set the CPU multiplier to the correct one.

Assumming this was not a overclocked system and being 550mhz. I would think the multiplier is 5.5 so just set the FSB to 100mhz.
