CPU noise when asleep

I have an 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo IMac. I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Maverick. All seems ok except now when in sleep mode a recurring noise keeps happening day and night on a irregular time interval. I sounds much like the sound when the cpu is coming back to life from the sleep mode, but the computer is still asleep. Does anyone know a solution for this? Thank you, Terry.
