CPU Fans NEED REPLACING?

Oct 11, 2004 4:56PM PDT

I'm thinking of upgrading my computer's CPU from a 2600 AMD Athlon XP to a AMD Athlon XP 3200. since I'm doing that I want to transfer the 2600 over to my older PC. Would I need to replace the CPU fan for the 2600 with a new one? Someone once told me that the little heat paste is not reusable. Not sure can I just directly transfer it. I already checked my motherboard for compat. issues and it's all good. I just want to know whether I can just directly transfer my CPU with fan and all over to that old computer. remember the heat sink paste or whatever you call it.

The fan itself can be re-used, however if it is noisy or flaky consider a replacement as well. The heatpad or thermal pad compound probably won't transfer well or not at all. Get heatsink compound as the replacement to place where the thermal pad used to be. Scrape off the thermal pad and wipe clean with alcohol and then place new compound there. Then remount your HSF setup on your other system. Here is a website that may provide some clues/hints, etc..

As long as you transfer the CPU with the Fan/Heatsink attached you will have absolutely no problems. Just make sure that you clean the fan with compressed air while it's out of the system.
