CPU fan not running

Apr 23, 2004 6:21AM PDT

This was a sudden problem. After about 20 minutes of running, my PC shuts down without warning. I got to the BIOS setup screen one time and noticed the temp of the CPU was high, & CPU fan was not running at all. I bought new fan, and it still does not run. I guess it is not the fan? Thanks for any input. (ASUS A7V8X-X VIA KT-400 DDR motherboard; AMD AthlonXP 1.8G) Thanks!

I would look at the power supply with suspicion.

A fried processor is a likely guess. Athlons do not last long without proper cooling.

If the processor and/or mobo were already toast he would never get as far as CMOS setup.

I'd check your connections. Chances are it's your power supply or it's the connection from the Fan to the motherboard. Also, if your fan isn't working, return it to where you bought it.

Thanks for the input. I shall buy a new power supply and return the fan. I will post again if it doesn't work. Thank you all.

Before you get a new power supply, did you try all the connections to the fan with the power supply?

Maybe the power lead that you are trying is dead..... If your fan connects to the MB then the power supply is not the problem......

Also, power supplys are around 35 - 40 dollars.... You can get a brand new tower with a 300 or 350 power supply for around 50. I like this idea because it means that all is new and fresh.

I would suspect it is the MOBO and not the Powersupply. That is if another good cpu fan didn't run when connected to that MOBO. -craig

Update...check and see if you can connect your CPU fan to the motherboard in another place. IF not, see if you can just buy a 3-pin to 4-pin adapter in order to connect it to your power supply using one of the Molex connectors (the ones you use to connect to system fans and your drives). Try to do that first BEFORE you go getting another power supply (I hope you get this soon enough!).
