Question

Cpu and optical ddrive upgrade for Lenovo Ideapad500-15ACZ

Sep 19, 2016 5:29AM PDT

Hi!I
I just upgraded my Lenovo Id500-15ACZ memory to 16Gbytes and I'd like to upgrade the CPU(A10-8700P) and the DVD optical drive to a bluray one, could someone might give me some compatible compatible parts ID please? Its OS is Ubuntu 16.04.
Thanks for the time spent to read the message and, eventually, to give an answer. Cheers!

The Lenovo-site (or customer service) should list the compatible CPU's (if any) and what BIOS version they need. Nobody except Lenovo would risk to advise you anything without it being tested and supported.

Here's what I did for BluRay

I snagged the Buffalo BRXL-PC6U2 for 55USD and it had BR player software for Windows in it. I won't bore you with BR video playing issues on Linux but this is compatible with the 10 Linux distros I tried over the past year. By compatible this does not include playing BR videos. You know that story.

Thanks, nice idea but I still need an internal buray drive.

Thanks, I already got 2 Plextors PX-B120U-02, one configured for the US blurays and the other one for the Europeans' ones. I tested them both on my Ideapad and VLC with my current Linux conf and it was ok. Actually I plan to give my Ideapad to my kids and keep my USB3 blurays drive with me. So my question's still pending for an internal bluray drive.

Then pull the existing drive and look at it.

Here that's what I do to compare it with bog standard ODD (optical disc drives.) The one thing that is always off is the bezel. Over time I've stopped trying to get the bezel spot on for reasons (money.) Now I just pull the drive and 99.99% of the time it's the usual laptop ODD and in goes the new ODD.

Folk that do this the first time often ask over and over. After a few they get it.

Details about the internal optical disk drive

Thanks for spending time with me. So I had a look at the drive itself and I have to tell you that it is 9mm high and its 8A65H 11B. I forgot to tell in my first post these info, especially the height which make it slimer than the bluray drives I kept from my previous laptops(HP&Acer). I which I couldpost some photos but I can't figure out where to post them so I can display them int this forum. Thanks again for your time and patience.
