counting unique occurrences in Excel

I have a two-column spreadsheet that lists people's names and dollar amounts. I want to summarize it in two ways. First, I want a way that I can get a count of unique names so I know how many individuals are in the list. Second, for each individual, I want a total dollar amount. Any help would be appreciated. At this time I am using Excel 2000.
