Counterfeit Toothpaste: ?

Jun 14, 2007 7:57AM PDT

WASHINGTON -- The Colgate?Palmolive Company said Thursday that counterfeit toothpaste has been found in discount stores in four states.

The 5-ounce tubes of imported toothpaste, labeled Colgate, have been recalled.

The importer said they may contain a poisonous chemical found in antifreeze.

A Food and Drug Administration official confirmed that testing determined that the chemical, diethylene glycol, was found in a product with the Colgate label.

But he said the agency is unsure if it is really Colgate or a counterfeit. "Made in South Africa" is printed on the box.

Colgate said it does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa.

Just think, it might keep your teeth from chattering. Think positive. Happy

Wonder if they used that chemical....

...... to make the product sweet. I know that dogs died from drinking antifreeze , apparently because it tasted sweet. Kids are prone to swallowing toothpaste.

Toothpaste has recently shot up in price. About a dollar since my last purchase.

Anyway, I got a chuckle out of your "teeth chattering" comment. Happy

Yes, dogs loved that stuff.

When I used to do all my own repairs on the cars, I had to be very careful not to spill the antifreeze on the ground. Caught my dog one day trying to lap it up off the ground after spilling the drain bucket. Never had a problem with the kids. Today, most garages charge you a fee to dispose of it, as well as your engine oil. Listed as hazardous waste.

Pennies saved for what...

This comes on the heels of other toothpastes imported from China found in many discount or "dollar stores" that too were laced with a similar glycol. But none were labeled Colgate brands. Strange that this comes when it does.

I hope the Pepsi and Coca-Cola pops I buy at the discount stores are the real stuff. Wink -----Willy
