Didn't Work for Me: couldnt open multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)part

I made sure the new HDD was connected as the sole/main IDE disk. Nothin' doing. Then tried going to BIOS to do an Auto detect of the drives. It shows up there but when I force it to auto detect, it pauses then returns without any info, indicating that it's not detecting the HDD.

Brand new HDD and problem began AFTER completing (or seemed to) the installation of MS XP.

Any new idea? My next option is to cycle through the RAM then it's on to checking/changing the IDE ribbon cable. After that, I'm done and will look to build another pc from scratch.

Basic system info: Windows XP SP2 (new install onto new HDD), specialty build (no model #/make), 320GB HDD (new), 750wt PS. What other system info is needed?

Thanks for any help you can give to fix this old problem reborn.

You say the HDD is not shown in the BIOS.

Amazing

I was trying to get my CDROM to boot so I could use my Ultimate Boot CD to recover my Windows password for my user account, but I kept getting this message when I tried to boot to the CD. I even put in my Windows CD to reinstall the OS, but the same message came up. I spent a good 30 minutes switching jumpers and trying different IDE cables and different CD drives before I came to this forum. I couldn't believe that after the 5 minutes it took for me to switch my CD drive to the main IDE port that it worked. Thanks a lot guys.
