Question

Could you help me decide on a gaming laptop?

Mar 16, 2016 2:34PM PDT

Hello, I am looking for advice on a gaming laptop. I have a budget of around $2000, and have narrowed down my search - The acer predator 17 w/ 980m 16 gigs of ram ( upgradeable to 64 ) and i7 6th gen, asus rog g752vt w/ gsync and 970m and 16 gigs of ram, i7 6700, asus rog g751jy with 980m and gsync 24 gigs of ram i7 4720 hq, and finally alienware 17 r3 with i7 6th gen, 980m, 16 gigs of ram, FHD, and also comes with a graphics amplifier so that I could boost the graphics with it.
I would go with the alienware 17 r3 because it seems to be the most future proof ( because of the EGPU ), but it's also got the worst cooling - it can reach 124 degrees Fahrenheit in the back fans.
If you have any other suggestions then I am all ears - I would preferably like one with 980m +, and 17 inch and upgradeable.
I was also thinking about the MSI GT72S 6QE.
Thanks for your time!

My son picked up a very nice ROG.
Mar 16, 2016 2:41PM PDT

I'll share my son just replaced his 5 year old laptop with another gamer laptop. Here's the old and the new.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034NGZWM ( ASUS Republic of Gamers G51JX-X3 later upped to 8GB RAM, SSD )
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01578ZKPO ( ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 15-Inch Gaming Laptop, Discrete GPU GeForce GTX 960M 2GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4, 1TB ) and for 120 bucks we swapped out the 1TB HDD for a 512GB SSD.

Yes it has only a 960m but he tells me all the latest games like Metal Gear Sold V with ease. Are you going for overkill?

Yeah

I am completely going overkill, however, I do have a $2000 budget, and I also want something with a bit more design ( yes, I know looks are deceiving but if i'm paying that much, I want something that stands out and makes people say wow ) however I'm sure it's an awesome laptop Happy

Also, it wouldnt be a massive upgrade from my current laptop ( which is the older version of what your son has ) because mine has 860m.
Thanks for your response, anyway Grin

If I'm honest

I'm looking for an opinion on the laptops I've listed above - I just want some advice for which one is the best - keyboard, hardware, ram graphics, screen etc.

Thanks for your response anyway Grin

So far the ROGs have been nice and

Given the usual care we get years on each model. The usual care is canned air on the vents every 1st of the month. If we forget it once then we remember the next 1st.

You can compare CPUs and GPUs at
cpuboss.com and gpuboss.com

I'm running into folk that are putting in more than 16GB. For now, that's burning money for gamers. Hey, won't tell them to not do this as it brings down costs for the rest of us.

Nod to 6th gen i7 with DDR4.

Well if you get the AW17 with the EGPU then

it will never reach those temps because the External cards are doing the work. Thats the reason it was created to move the heat from inside the box to outside.

Nice laptop recommendation

It is not an easy question, all laptops you've mentioned they all loaded with top-level component, however, each item have its own product features, and what my favorite is MSI GT72S because it has excellent cooling system and MXM design, it's upgradeable.

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT72S-Dominator-Pro-G-219/dp/B0150PLXO6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459553092&sr=8-1&keywords=MSI+GT72S+6QE

It is suit for most of gamer needs. I love its robust silver lining keyboard and the speakers on this machine which are really amazing. By far the most powerful "laptop" I've ever known and with its great design I believe that you will like it, if you have a chance experience on it.

Just pick the optimized CPU+GPU
Apr 11, 2016 5:12PM PDT

There's no point to get non-i7 Gen6 processor at the moment, and agreed with you for GTX980M+ preference, so I would probably go for one of MSI GT72S 6QE, Predator 17, Rog g752vt, and Alienware 17.
If you're a heavy gaming and you may wanna upgrade by your own in the future, maybe MSI GT72S as Eve0621 mentioned would be a better choice.

What I will chose....
Apr 11, 2016 10:12PM PDT

If i got the $2,000...
I will take the MSI GT72S, it has the 980M,
although the Asus ROG could be a choice as well, the price is higher than your budget limits.

but if the heavy graphic games and too many gaming features are not necessary, i will chose the Lenovo Y700...

Yeah ...

Yeah, and the dual NVMe SSD of GT72s is awesome ! 1.5 times faster than NVMe SSD, smart choice !
