Resolved Question

Could I Dwnld Only WRITER Part of Open Ofc. 3.4?

Jun 28, 2012 2:01AM PDT

Don't want FULL version. Could I save a lot of space on my computer by downloading only the WRITER section of new Apache Open Ofc 3.4, and if so, which is the best LINK? Is it really free? XP Home, SP 3. Thanks much, in advance.

No, unless the Apache group did something significantly different with the way they packaged OpenOffice, you have to download the entire suite, then choose to install only Writer.

That being said, yes OpenOffice is really free in both senses of the word: libre (free speech) and gratis (free of charge).

You may want to consider LibreOffice instead however. Without getting into a lot of politics, before Oracle handed over OpenOffice to the Apache Foundation, most of the developers left to create The Document Foundation and LibreOffice, which was under active and regular development while OpenOffice was left to wither on the vine. Then Oracle decided to act like a spoiled child by handing over OpenOffice to the Apache Foundation instead of the Document Foundation. Either choice would be fine, but LibreOffice has been under sustained development for quite a bit longer than OpenOffice, so has a few more features, refinements, and bug fixes.

Only having to install the word processing part of the Suite is the BEST news, so quick after I posted the question, and probably the deal is the same at Libre Office so I think I'll try that first. Thanks again.
