Could anyone tell me if this pc is worth it?

by mustanggt08 / November 25, 2009 5:30 AM PST

Hi all,
After having my fair share of problems with the PS3 as well as my laptop actually going out recently, Ive decided that I want to get a desktop computer now with the capability of playing some games. Im not looking for anything like alienware or something that will max out every game with no lag whatsoever, just a nice mid range computer that can handle a good majority of the games out now. I found this one on craigslist listed for $250 and Im wondering if its worth it. (its used and the name of it is the HP XW8200 workstation)The specs it has listed are:
HP XW8200
Dual 3.6Ghz Xeon (64 bit)
4x1GB PC3200,
72GB U320
Quadro FX3400 graphics
Windows XP
My old laptop had a dual core AMD X2 and a radeon 3100 integrated graphics card so Im looking for something that can do at least better than that. I couldnt really find much info on the FX3400, is that a decent graphics card? On a side note, just to give you all an idea of what kind of gamrs I play, a couple of recent pc games I bought are Sims 3, Resident Evil 5, and Batman Arkham Asylum at a buy 2, get 1 free sale. Any insight on this would greatly be appreciated, $250 seems like a good deal seeing as how much I see them going used for online but on the flipside, idk if its any good for gaming as well.

Seems nice enough for 250.

You'll want the restore media so you can begin with a clean install or start.

The FX 3400 is about a Nvidia 6800 (about equivalent to the Geforce 6800 GTO, ) so while the CPU is nice enough, you have the usual 4GB RAM this card is dated. At least the machine has PCIE if you find the card lacking.

You'll likely play everything but want more video card power.

Should be fine, especially for $250, and most games.

You may already know about the program called "Can You Run It". It would be interesting if you could choose a couple of games you want to play, run the program on your laptop, and somehow run it on the computer you are considering to buy. Perhaps the seller would run it for you. If you are not familiar with this program, Google "Can You Run It", and download. It installs instantly. The program has one button to request a game, and another for selecting from their list of games. Hit the "Can You Run It" button, and it will come back conveying data on the game requirement, and your system (CPU, Speed, Video Card, etc.). On one of my systems it recommended more than 512 MB Video Ram, 640 MB needed, for Crysis. I could play it, but not at the recommended level. Everything else checked out fine.
