Costco 42 inch Plasma TVs

Jan 31, 2006 12:21PM PST

Costco carries the Phillips 42PF7220A/37 for about $1850 and will be carrying the Vizio P42HD (not certain about the model number) for about the same price. Any one have experience with either of these? Any truth to the rumour that the models carried by Costco don't have the same parts (i.e., inferior quality) as models carried by other retailers?

"That Sony set is about the best tube 16:9 HDTV in the world."

I have the exact same 34" Sony widescreen (34XBR960)that you ACTUALLY made a positive comment on! So you still think I own crap? And that's the weak point of my system!

Just more proof that you are a lost, pathetic soul, screaming for help!!! One word for ya - THERAPY!

Loser,

You have made 3 posts on this overnight. I think that this proves that YOU are the freak here. Anything else to do? Why not go listen to your system - oh, that's right, it sucks, so it is hard to I guess.

Yes, that Sony TV is a good TV, very good. And if it were not for the limited size, I would have owned that already.

I have made several positive comments on here, but when I see things that are as silly as the crap being laid out on these posts, I cannot help but speak up about it.

Rega is decent gear, but not nearly at the level of LINN, sorry.

''you are not spending AT LEAST $4,000, you are wasting your time'', I DONT KNOW WHETHER TO ENVY YOUR BUDGET OR FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR CONVICTIONS.

I DO BELIEVE THAT QUALITY COMES AT A COST, BUT A HIGH PRICE TAG DOES NOT INSURE IT. TO INSIST THAT A $4000 BUY IN IS REQUIRED FOR ANYTHING OF VALUE IS YOUR MAD WORLD. THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT AS EASILY SEDUCED BY THE HIGH END BRANDS, AND ARE UNWILLING TO SPEND THAT MUCH, WOULD RATHER SAVE OUR BUDGET FOR THE NEXT BIG THING. REGARDLESS HOW MUCH YOU SPEND TODAY, A TV IS A PERISHABLE ITEM.

IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN THAT ''LOWER TIER'' PLASMA USES COMPONENTS FROM THE MAJOR COMPANYS, BUT THAT DOESNT MAKE THEM UNACCEPTABLE. CNET REVIEWERS HAS THE VIZIO RATED ''VERY GOOD''. (http://reviews.cnet.com/V_Vizio_P50HDM/4505-6482_7-31484764.html)

HAVING THE ''BIG NAME'' DOESNT AUTOMATICLY MEAN YOUR IN THE BIG GAME, JUST ASK THE COLTS.

Go ahead and believe all the reviews and enjoy your crappy Vizio TV.

Big name?
Feb 6, 2006 9:16PM PST

Big names? Like Runco, LINN? Most people have never heard of them, but EVERYONE knows Bose, so it must be better? Man, don't get pissed because you need a hearing aid or new glasses to see the difference.

He doesn't know that some of us are aware of and occasionally read for a good laugh the reviews in Absolute Sound and Stereophile.

We also know about the tier one brands such as Richard Gray, Bryston, Apogee, Spendor, Classe, Ayre, Dunlavy, Shordaunt-Mort (Ha! a little joke their), Wilson, Spica, Stax, Nirvana (and you thought that was white noise, another joke), Simaudio, Musical fidelity, Sonus Faber, Radio Shack, Krell, Dynavector, Mark levinson, Buster Hymen and Conrad Johnson just to mention a few and I really had to rack my mind to come up with those.

The elitest golden ear types never want to read objective reviews or hear about double blind tests or any other objectve facts.

However, this one is the first that I have encountered that was into such rude behavior and name calling.

I'm mortified!

No, but....
Feb 7, 2006 4:17AM PST

Alienware systems are nice, but computers are a great example where it is very difficult to notice a difference between say a $1,000 and a $3,000 computer. I mean, sitting there and actually noticing a difference - not some dumb benchmark test or some test that shows a 0.1 nanosecond difference in opeing a certain file.

However, if you cannot hear the difference between a $250 CD player and a $2,500 CD player, you definitely need hearing aids and should not buy anything but a home theater in a box. Now, if you are not willing to spend that much more for that difference in sound (or picture in the case of a plasma), then that is your choice, but don't slam someone who is willing to spend the difference to have even slightly better sound. Let us ''audiophiles'' waste our money as you say.

If you read the posts, you will notice that everyone knows that you have excellent equipment. The problem if the way you berate anything that anyone else has. You are right in the build quality of some components, but actual audio/video performace does not increase near as much as the price. I am sure that the transport mechanism is better and the chasis is heavier and the power supply on you DVD player is better than our 150 dollar models and in 20 years it will still be working. Of course, technology will pass it by in much less than its life. I will not pay over a thousand dollars for the first HD DVD players. I will wait until they come down and a lot of HD DVDs are available. I no loner stress out on the need to have the best equipment out there. As you said yourself, if you can not hear or see the difference, you do not need it. For those of you that can hear sounds above what a dog can hear and can see a dead pixel at 50 feet, go for it. Do not defend your elite equipment by degrading ours, point out the merits and differences and we will respect you. The way to build yourself up is not to try to bring down everyone around you. Do it on your own merits.

The difference....
Feb 7, 2006 9:21PM PST

I have made positive comments about some posts (like when the guy was talking about home theater speaker packages)... someone actually posted that Klipsh has a good PC speakers system for a home theater. Once I picked myself up off the floor laughing, I realized that this is bascially a computer geek website, not a real audio/video forum. Someone who actually thinks that PC speakers are a decent answer to this guys question about wht speakers he should buy for his new 20'x20' theater room.

However, one guy replied to him saying that IF you are only looking to spend about $700 on speakers, then Energy and Def. Tech. make good speaker packages - I completely agreed with him. For the money, those are great speakers. Do they sound aanywhere near a fully active LINN package, no, but they are darn good for the money and only about 5% of us out there are willing to spend the difference in cost.

As far as HD DVD, I am avoiding that like the plague for now. I am so pissed about the new VHS/Betamax war that is going on with HD DVD and Blueray that I cannot see straight.

And you do not need to hear sounds above what dog hears to easily realize the sonic differences between say a $2000 audio setup and a $20,000 system. Again, if you can't hear the difference easily, it could be your ears (age).

It is very easy for people who either are not willing or cannot afford really good equipment to slam someone for buying it (and wasting their money in their eyes). I work with a guy who is really into mountain biking and has 2 bikes that he paid over $6500 for total. Would I spend that much on 2 mountain bikes, no, but that is what he is into, so I can understand. I have always said that everyone spends their money somewhere, on something. Think about someone you might know who drinks or smokes a lot. How much do they completely WASTE every year on that crap? I would rather buy a hi-end system that I can enjoy for the next 10+ years, everyday.

I often find myself sitting and listening to music for 2-3 hours at times.... no TV on, no reading a magazine during, just sitting and listening to music. Even this concept is weird to many people, but then again, they likely do not have a system like mine.
