Question

Corrupted file after bit locker repair?

Aug 8, 2017 12:35PM PDT

Hi all, so I plugged in my external hard drive (HD1) into my laptop and it started to load up bitlocker, it also said to NOT unplug the device. It didn't start the encryption as I wasn't asked to put in a password yet then my hard drive fell off the table thus unplugging it...

I ended up with an "encrypted" hard drive which I couldn't access because I had no password. Fortunately I found a recovery key and was able to use repair-bde to copy the data onto another hard drive (HD2).

Unfortunately I still couldn't access it using windows explorer. I used cmd to copy the information from HD2 to another hard drive (HD3) where I can now see all the information in windows explorer.

But now when I try to open those files (jpeg and mp4), it claims that the file types are unsupported.. When I go to the properties of each file, the size, file name, creation date are all there, I just can't open them...

Somebody please help!!

something here doesn't make sense to me

If it was encrypted, was it decrypted in the copy over to the third hard drive?

Partially..
Aug 11, 2017 3:14AM PDT

I say partially because when i right click and select 'properties' of each file I can see the size, the date created, the date modified etc but I just can't open it. It's like a glass door..

that doesn't mean it's been decrypted

It just means there's a file description for the encrypted file, just like there is for all files created.

Answer
This is all about backups.
Aug 8, 2017 12:54PM PDT

But if it is a MP4 file, does it open with VLC PLAYER?

If not, the file is damaged and must be recovered from your backups.

Externals are too unsafe to go without backups. All this has been gone over before.

It's looking bad.

Using a PC today as well as smart phones have not made backups optional. The more I read this post the more I think you have to send the drive to drivesavers.com

Unfortunately it also doesn't work with VLC..

This is the end.

VLC is, as of today the most capable decoder known. It will even play damaged files. Given the story you have to restore from backups. No backups? PCs, smart phones and such are not reliable enough yet.

So did you use recovery? Then it may be that u have to use windows update to get all fixed out.Recovery sets you on state where you where when you was. Now you have to run updates to get where you was before. Updates get you there. If it does not get you there, you might have bigger issue.
Please run Windows update and get back after that.

after that

You can use device manager to see if there is any drivers missing (showed there).
Please do get any missing drivers from your PCs homepage. DO NOT use any "driver tools" or "pages for drivers". It is more than easy to get them by yourself from "right" plase.
If those files do not open after that, your may have lost them as "corrupted".
Hopefully you have them on camera or cloud... what ever they are

If hd1 fell off the table with the platters spinning then all bets are off.

When you copied it to hd2 you copied corrupt data.

When you copied hd2 to hd3 you just copied corrupt data.

Have a chat with drivesavers.

If you ever think you have corrupted file, you can check it easily with "VirusTotal" that page uses ALL good antivirus programs to check out any file or what ever you have and results are there to see.
Or you can upload app for browser, to check mails and files you are loading without getting them in your disk.

I don't think that site will tell you if your file is corrupt.

It scans a file for malware not corruption.
