any ideas as to how to get IE back --haven't yet tried
"last known good" but the machine has been rebooted several times. Forgotten how to get to the last known good after so many reboots. Any ideas?

last good configuration is part of the safe boot process, usually one of the options.

Depending on the version of IE you have, you should be able to do an uninstall, then re-install using add/remove software.

Also check for c:/windows/program files/internet explorer/setup/setup.exe

It might get you a version you can update from the Internet. But be carefull, it could repeat again.

Not likely Spybot caused this, more likely why you were installing it. Also get ad-aware and others mentioned throughout these forums.
