Corrupt files

Dec 3, 2003 1:56PM PST

I have gotten a new PC, and i put it together myself. everything went fine, but when i installed WinXP Pro Corp (with SP 1), it would ALWAYS have a missing file. It has never done it to me before. I have used this cd many times. I then proceed to add in a new cd drive thinking maybe its my cd drive causing problems. Nope, same thing. So i get another copy of WinXP Pro Corp with SP1, and it'll have the exact same file missing. Sometimes it'll have another file missing but theres always 1 file that gets left out. I've formatted and reinstalled 10-15 times already.

Now, I still manage to run WinXP even with this problem, but, when it comes to installing Video and Sound Drivers, it'll do the same thing. It cant be the cd's because they're brand new and came with the cards. So I download the drivers online, and load those. Now When I download things like java, directx9, divx, etc, THOSE files would be corrupt when i try to install! What's going on???

Just a note:

Movie files won't play.
Mp3's DO play via Winamp.
Computer will reboot itself automatically and I have yet to find the cause of the rebooting. (no error messages or anything, just reboots)

Another note:

-when i reboot, sometimes an error will pop up and say "there was a problem preventing windows from checking the licence on your computer. error code: blah blah blah". when i click ok, it'll take me to the welcome screen to choose a user to log in. (never happens when that licence thing doesnt show up)

-system specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Mobo: Asus A7V600
Vid: Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2
RAM: 512 MB DDR (dont recall what kind)

1. The file 'qedwipes.dll" is a legitimately issued Microsoft file. Such files you can always check at the "DLL Help Database."

Computer will reboot itself automatically and I have yet to find the cause of the rebooting. (no error messages or anything, just reboots)

2. The article [Q307973] suggest that a user configure the action Windows should take when a severe error (also called a fatal system error, or Stop error) occurs.

when i reboot, sometimes an error will pop up and say "there was a problem preventing windows from checking the licence on your computer. error code: blah blah blah".

Have you tried System File Checker?

Start|Run|Type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and with the space after sfc.

I have ran sfc /scannow like you said, and it would scan and all, but once its done scanning, nothing happens. it just closes. is it supposed to be like that? did it replace the missing files?

1. The article [Q310747] discusses and describes the Beta release of System File Checker (Sfc.exe), a command-line tool that examines protected system files and restores the correct versions by using backups stored in the Dllcache folder or files copied from the operating system CD. A /Scannow scans for corrupt/damaged/missing files and automatically replaces -- (a syntax which is not listed in this reference).

2. The article [Q222193] explains that Windows File Protection (WFP) prevents programs from replacing critical Windows system files. Programs must not overwrite these files because they are used by the operating system and by other programs. Protecting these files prevents problems with programs and the operating system.

it would ALWAYS have a missing file. It has never done it to me before.

when you give specific information such as a filename in a question, somebody might relate to it. Though seemingly of consequence, I think this is a good recommendation.

Re:Corrupt files with XP Pro "Corp" CD.

Frankly you are outside your support channel for this version. Take no offense that mostly pirates seek help on this version outside the support channels because they have pirated this version.

Go back to your Microsoft support and they will either issue you a new CD or comment about your selected hardware or tell you to have the machine looked over by the vendor.

Don't expect a lot of help for this version.

I've been told that this problem could be due to bad memory. I'm going to take my computer in to the store i bought it at and see if this is the case. Thanks for everybody's help.
