corrupt file

May 8, 2005 7:57AM PDT

I keep getting an error message saying x5tbemrg in my temp files is corrupt, and to run CHKDSK utility. Clearing my temp files fixes the problem temporarily but it always comes back. How can I get rid of it, and what the heck is it? Is it from a web site, or some program hidden away on my computer? I run adaware every couple of days and it doesn't pick it up.

Any help greatly appreciated, it's really starting to annoy me.

Thanks

More than AdAware. . .

Download and install Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, and CWShredder. All free and found by Google.

okay......

I downloaded, installed, and ran those programs, and cleared the cache, but the error message still keeps popping up. Any idea what the file even is? Thanks

"Exact message" please.

Can you share the "exact message" in quoted format?

It may reveal another angle to attack the issue.

message reads
May 15, 2005 4:36PM PDT

and I quote:

x5tbemrg.exe - corrupt file
The file or directory c:\DOCUME~1\roxanne\LOCALS~1\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\GDA3KL23 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

Most of the time the message comes up in the tray with a yellow yield sign and a ! inside it, with the above message in a bubble. Sometimes it comes up in a window by itself when I connect to the internet.

If anyone knows what this is about, could you please let me know what it is, and how I can fix it. I googled the error message and came up with nothing.

Thanks, Roxanne

Sounds like spyware.

I'd head to the Virus Forum, look to that Anti-Parasite Suite, run all the tools, move up to Hijackthis logs and forums to wipe it out.

I can bet that Firefox would not do this.

"Cache" corruption perhaps.
