General discussion

correctly display image in finder

Sep 1, 2007 7:42AM PDT

hello

I have some pictures i made using my camera "verticaly". I would like them to be displayed by finder in the correct way, but even if I rotate them in Preview or any other program, Finder will still display them "horizontly".

Is there a way to correct this and force Finder to display them correctly? this also afects uploadig images to the internet, because even if they have been rotated with any other program, the Website I am trying to upload them to, will assume the position that they are displayed with Finder.

helppp

thanks
filipe

Displaying Images
Sep 1, 2007 11:22PM PDT

Strictly speaking, Finder does not display images.
Images are displayed by applications like Preview, iPhoto, Graphic Converter, PhotoShop, etc.

If you have your pictures in iPhoto, and why wouldn't you, you can rotate the image in either direction. However, unless you "save" the image in its new position, the next time it opens it will be in the original orientation.

Open one of your pictures in Preview, Rotate it, Choose Save As.." from the File menu, give it a new name and Save it.
Quit Preview, (maybe not important) and then open your newly saved picture. It is as you saved it.

This worked for me on a JPG, during the course of typing this reply.

It should work in other Graphics programs too.

Let us know if this is what you meant

icons in finder
Sep 2, 2007 1:25AM PDT

thanks for your answer.

What I meant was that I wanted Finder to display Images Icons in their correct position. I somehow managed to get Finder to do this with 1 image, but I can't remember how I did it.

The other issue is that when I save an image in the correct position, either with Preview or Iphoto, when I upload it to the internet, most of the times it is in the original position (ie the incorrect one displayed as an Icon in Finder) and not in the correct one, that sows when I open it with Preview or Iphoto.

Ahh, you mean when you look at an image file as it sits on the desktop, the icon is a preview of the image itself.
You also see the preview image when browsing through the folders.

Using the previously mentioned technique, I have been unable to reproduce your problem. Rotate images, saved as such, have an icon/preview picture that matches the orientation of the file.

Is it possible that you are uploading the wrong image?

well, in my system, when I rotate an image and save it as such (with preview, for example), Finder still displays its Icon in the original orientation (pre-rotation). maybe there is an option somewhere where I can change this, but I still havent found it.
with uploading, it is the same problem. the host site assumes the original orientation of the image and not the rotated one. my guess is that the information about this Rotation is saved in a way that only Preview and similar programs can read it, and not Finder, or the websites. i dont know. this sucks.

well... what I found when trying to
Sep 2, 2007 7:28AM PDT

replicate your sypmtom is that "Preview" behaves as you say.

But then, I've never used "Preview" as an image manipulation application... it is an image viewer. Yes, there are some tools to make cahnges, but they are "non-destructive" which is why they revert.

iPhoto, on the other hand, does do image manipulation... and from what I have found, the thumbnail (or Finder image or whatever you call it) retains the rotation and any other manipulation I do to the image (including cropping and color enhancement).

Once the image is how I want it to look in iPhoto, I drag it to the desk-top... its thumbnail is as I left it in iPhoto, and when I upload the image to a web site, it appears correctly - again, as I left it in iPhoto.

So - bummer I can't replicate your issue - but it seems to be working just fine for me.

The Problem Is...

I had the same problem and did a little investigation. The problem is the EXIF data in your image file is incorrect. Finder looks at this to determine the orientation of the image and displays it as such. Interestingly enough, Photoshop and Preview do not.

So, you need to get an EXIF editor and switch the 2 tags:

PixelXDimension
PixelYDimension

Obviously the greater number going to the way in which you want the file to be oriented. Unfortunately, I don't see any easy way to edit this info in MacOS without using 3rd party software.

same problem
Sep 6, 2007 1:30PM PDT

I have the EXACT same problem as you and I have been trying to figure it out. Manipulating images in iphotos doesnt help. And even if it did, I don't think I can afford to "save as" for like a batch of 100 photos.
It's frustrating that I can upload pictures in the correct orientation. pls help!!

An image that has been rotated and saved in iPhoto will always display in the orientation that it was saved in.
Export that image to the Desktop, or wherever, set the Finder View to display the image and it will be displayed as saved.

Just rotating the image in iPhoto, Preview, Graphic Convertor or any other image application will not help. The image has to be saved.

I don't understand the statement "I don't think I can afford to save as" unless you mean the space issue. If you are uploading these pictures to somewhere else, surely you have reduced the size of them and converted them to JPG (or similar). iPhoto will do this automatically for emails and such.
If it is a time issue, Graphic Convertor will rotate and resize you images as a batch job. 100's at a time if necessary.

On the other hand, what exactly do you mean by "upload" and to where?

thanks!

Thanks! I will try Graphic converter out.
I usually upload images to flickr or deviant art.
Anyway I managed to display the pictures in the correct orientation after rotating them in preview. I quit finder and relaunch it. Usually after I relaunch it, the settings will be saved.
