Corps' pledge to return NO levees to pre-Katrina status

Jun 1, 2006 4:04AM PDT

turns out REALLY not to mean much:

Army Corps: La. levees were poorly built.

>> Louisiana's hurricane protection system was overwhelmed by Katrina because it was built disjointedly using outdated data, according to an Army Corps of Engineers report released Thursday.

"The system did not perform as a system," according to the report, released on the first day of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. "The hurricane protection in New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana was a system in name only...." The report, prepared by the Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force, said the area's hurricane protection system was inadequate and incomplete, noting it had been built disjointedly over several decades using outdated elevation data. <<

And for the record, this is NOT intended as Bush-bashing -- sadly, neglect of the NO levees (and lots of other critical national infrastructure) was a bipartisan effort over a couple of decades, the fruits of Congresscritters more intent on pork than rational prioritization.

If the local pols ...

... don't make it THEIR priority, it's hard to blame national politicians for falling short. Bottom line, if a fraction of all the tourism $$$ were designated BY the local politicians for their OWN self preservation, we wouldn't even be talking about this.

The argument that there are vital ports for this being a federal issue is weak at best. If the issue is to make ports safe/secure, that requires minimal federal monies compared to sustaining a welfare state 6' below sea level.
