Question

Coreldraw X3 problem - CDR File crashed - lost file

Aug 24, 2015 2:32AM PDT

I am having a problem trying to open a CDR file that I think crashed. This is the 2nd time it has happened with different files.

The file still shows up in my external drive but has an icon next to it which it did not have before (a green pencil, like the icon in my program files for CorelDraw X3). When I click on it, it opens up in corel but as a blank page. Did I loose this file or can I some how recover it?

Thanks

- Why use an external drive? That's only for backup and transport, not for working on.
- The icon isn't interesting. What is the extension? Same extension = same icon, so different icon is different extension. What's the extension before the crash, and what is it now?
- Files don't crash, only programs crash.
- You only lose what you didn't backup. If you find the program crashing often, you make a copy of the file every x minutes, so you lose at most x minutes of work. This is why MS Office programs have default autostore and recovery built in; Microsoft knows how to handle a PC. If Corel doesn't, it's up to you.

Most have trial that you can see if it works.

Do a search on recovery software. What size is the file, if its very small then the odds are there nothing in it and your screwed, also try setting the view to simple outline and zooming right! also check the layer manager to see if you have any layers set to invisible.
might be worth sticking the file on here and maybe someone else can get it to open
Corel may have a contents/652-backup backup file on that saved. PM me and I'll try out the PDF Fusion I just got in and see if that opens it

Working from externals is treacherous. You have been burned twice so time to move to safer methods and procedures.

I keep such work synced with my cloud backup and work on local copies then sync when I feel it needs it. Also I never work on my last copy. Backup is a rule not an option.
